ElectraNet is exploring the best way to expand South Australia’s high-voltage electricity network to meet growing demand and unlock future opportunities.
The Northern Transmission Project (known as NTx) has been established to investigate options for a potential major network upgrade that would support the State’s economic growth, enable new electricity generation projects and strengthen transmission links for industrial expansion.
With South Australia’s electricity needs growing, we must enhance network capacity to ensure a reliable, affordable and sustainable supply — now and into the future.
Currently in early planning, the project is investigating options to construct a new transmission line, to be built in two sections:
Early engagement with stakeholders and communities is underway to understand changing energy needs, priorities and concerns. This feedback will shape early planning and route selection as part of the Regulatory Investment Test for Transmission (RIT-T), a cost-benefit analysis to ensure NTx delivers the best value for consumers, balancing costs with long-term economic and energy benefits.
Enabling industrial and economic development by expanding energy transfer capacity into Adelaide and to the State’s North.
Enhancing energy security by providing an alternate transmission route to Adelaide, reducing the risk of disruptions from extreme weather events, such as bushfires.
Supporting economic growth and opportunities for new investment and jobs in regional South Australia.
Supporting South Australia to achieve 100% net renewable energy as we continue our transition away from fossil fuels for electricity generation.
Working with impacted communities to identify a range of shared benefits that align with local priorities and can be delivered over time.
Accelerating renewable energy adoption by improving the flow of wind and solar power into the grid, ensuring greater access to clean energy.
