About the Northern Transmission Project (NTx)

South Australia is on the cusp of a once-in-a-generation growth and jobs opportunity, as industries such as mining, manufacturing and data centres look to expand, attracted by the state’s strong energy resources and valuable minerals. As these industries grow, demand for electricity is set to increase significantly. This means our transmission network’s capacity needs to increase too, ensuring more power can flow where it’s needed.

ElectraNet launched the NTx planning study in response to the Australian Energy Market Operator’s (AEMO) 2024 Integrated System Plan (ISP), which identified growing energy needs and industrial demand in South Australia. In their subsequent 2026 ISP, AEMO determined that NTx remains on the Optimal Development Path for the National Electricity Market, but with later timing than previously identified.

The Commonwealth Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water has also recognised NTx as a priority energy project.

ElectraNet has commenced a rigorous cost-benefit analysis of the project, known as the Regulatory Investment Test for Transmission (RIT-T), to determine whether NTx delivers the best value for electricity consumers, balancing costs with long-term economic and energy benefits.

Comprehensive project investigations and engagement are continuing to inform early planning and route development as part of the RIT-T, ensuring feedback on local priorities and concerns are included in our assessments.

The project will only proceed if it can be economically justified as beneficial to customers, based on the RIT-T assessment, which is verified by independent approval from the Australian Energy Regulator (AER).

Route development considerations

Viable transmission line corridors will be identified through collaboration with stakeholders, taking into account a wide range of constraints and opportunities. These include potential impacts on the environment, cultural heritage, landholders, local communities and businesses. 

The exact route will be further refined by: 

  • a formal multi-criteria assessment, known as an MCA and undertaken in partnership with stakeholders 
  • evaluation of costs and benefits to ensure an efficient and effective solution 
  • environmental considerations, including potential effects on land, ecosystems and communities 
  • feedback from landholders and Traditional Owners 
  • engineering and construction feasibility 
  • community input, which will play a vital role in shaping the final route.


ElectraNet will also undergo a rigorous consultation process, where community feedback will be a key consideration, with clear reporting on how it has influenced route selection.
 

We remain committed to working closely with local communities, landholders, businesses and industries, including agriculture and new electricity generation projects renewable energy. 

As we undertake a route development process, we will work closely with stakeholders and communities to identify issues, aspirations and local priorities to inform our work.

To identify the preferred path for the potential new transmission lines, we will follow an established step-by-step process that starts wide, looking at broad areas where the infrastructure could be built.

We gradually narrow the area down to identify a specific route, based on technical assessments, economic, environmental studies and ongoing stakeholder input, which is sought at every stage of the route development process. 

Project study area and route development

The map below shows the full area being considered for the NTx project. This includes a vast study area, which was based on energy demand, system planning, renewable energy zones (REZs) and economic benefits. The study area was reduced to a series of corridors for further investigation, informed by early stakeholder feedback.

 

A new corridor area was introduced in April 2026, following feedback from communities, particularly landholders and farming groups, suggesting areas east of Goyder’s Line could reduce impacts on high-value cropping land.

What’s the difference between a study area, corridor, route and easement?

Study area

The broad region where a new NTx transmission line may be built, based on existing and future electricity demand. This is where our investigations begin. Up to 100 kms wide

Corridor

Narrower pathways within the study area that avoid key constraints — early findings are applied to ensure that the corridor excludes sensitive locations and protects features highly-valued by our stakeholders. Two-to-30 kms wide

Route

The specific line or lines we propose, based on detailed analysis and stakeholder input to find the best balance between technical, environmental and community factors. 200 metres to one km wide

Easement

A defined strip of land where transmission infrastructure can be built and maintained — this is agreed with landholders and doesn’t change land ownership, just allows ElectraNet to establish and maintain infrastructure on the land. 60 to 100 metres wide
